Paralegal Job Outlook - Great
Expectations or Saturated Market?
Shelby Ryan
Due to already establish
market trends the Paralegal (also known as a Legal Assistant) field
is expected to experience substantial job growth over the next few
years and there's no reason to think it will stop then.
The
Bureau of Labor Statistics has stated that growth in the paralegal
profession will be dramatic compared to most other professions. In
fact, the growth rate is expected to be at or above 30 percent
through 2010.
So what are these market trends that virtually
guarantee a fantastic job market for paralegals for the foreseeable
future? Time and money… more specifically law firms are now hiring
legal assistants to do legwork type duties like paperwork and
research. It's simply good business to pay a paralegal to do the
work that doesn't require a law degree because it's saves the firm
money and it also frees up their attorneys to develop new clients
and spend more time preparing and representing clients in court.
Another big reason why the paralegal profession will continue to
realize strong growth is because more and more businesses,
corporations and non profit agencies have seen the benefits of
having a paralegal on staff and are looking to hire. Try and keep
this new job market in mind when searching for a job. Of course,
unless you have your mind set on working directory for a lawyer and
being in a law office this is another great option for finding the
right work environment and job opportunity for you.
Back in
1960s and 70s, legal assistants were trained by the law firm that
hired them but due to the relatively recent growth the profession
has been experiencing and will continue to experience, this is no
longer the case.
Today, paralegal training schools have
popped up all over the country and high quality training is
straight-forward and convenient, even for those who currently have
other jobs and have decided to get retrained as a paralegal.
Two year paralegal training certification programs are offered by
many community colleges and paralegal certification programs are
also being offered as part of a 4 year bachelors' degree in some
universities and colleges.
And of course, countless online
training correspondence courses have also been developed and this
type of training will definitely continue to grow at an outstanding
rate.
With so many training options available it's up to you
to take the time and do the proper amount of research to find the
best training option for you. Don't be afraid to ask questions and
more questions until you feel comfortable with a particular school,
instructor or online website. Regardless of who you decide to get
your paralegal training with, chances are that they will have
courses available to fit your budget and schedule.
Being a
paralegal isn't for everyone but if you love research, can work
under a deadline and have good writing and organizational skills
then it's clearly one of best career paths available today.
