The field of law is a vast arena of rules and regulations but one key player; the paralegal is surprisingly exempt from one rule. Paralegals, after decades of existence are still not required to become "certified". Clearly, it made sense backs in the 1960s when the profession first evolved out of a need for attorneys to free up their time from doing the "less lawyerly" activities like filling out documents, standard research and other office related paperwork. But you would think over the ensuing years that this would have been "corrected" but for some reason it has not. On the other hand, the marketplace has changed and more and more employers are now requiring that potential employees gain some type of certification before they will be considered for employment.

Paralegal in Law LibraryPivotal criteria to remember when examining the caliber of any paralegal program:

  • The central purpose of any high quality paralegal school should be total intellectual maturation of their students. Accomplishing this goal is accomplished by teaching applicable, common sense, usable job skills in addition to a solid core of legal theory.

The paralegal programs curriculum must also be broad enough to include subjects ranging from ethics, business organization and torts to legal research and writing. Additionally, the best paralegal degree schools will expend time and effort on developing a well-rounded, critical thinking student with outstanding communication, and organizational skills.

  • Real world experience and unquestionable scholastic credentials are key character traits any high quality paralegal program director will possess.

They must also have the desire to take "their" paralegal schools program to the highest level and the curriculum must be spot on for today's paralegal work environment. Similarly, the teaching staff must possess both the field experience and the scholastic background to be considered "experts" in their classrooms.

  • The latest fad in learning is to learn online through the internet but is this right learning environment for you or should you stick with the traditional brick and mortar classroom? The aforementioned is just one of the many questions you need to answer before pursuing your paralegal degree online. Another vital question that needs answered is how will you receive your training? Will it be web-based or through interactive video or whatever is the latest and greatest technological advance. Regardless of the delivery method it comes down to this; "Is online learning right for you?" If yes; jump right in because the benefits in convenience and cost are many but if not, then don't do it. Simply go out and find the best brick and mortar paralegal school near you.

Clearly, pursuing a paralegal career isn't for everyone but for those that enjoy research, have solid organizational and writing skills and can work under pressure this is a wide open and growing field that can offer financial security and professional satisfaction.
